Off‑Road Test Preparation – Gaerwen, Anglesey

At Huw Williams Driver Training Ltd in Gaerwen, Anglesey, we provide focused training and testing for the Module 3a off‑road manoeuvres for:

HGV / LGV – C1, C1E, C, CE
PCV / PSV – D1, D1E, D

With our own DVSA‑approved manoeuvring and testing site, being assessed by our own assessors and you practise and take your 3a test on the same layout, using the same type of vehicle, helping to reduce nerves and improve your chances of passing.

What Is Module 3a?

Module 3a is the off‑road part of the practical driving test for lorry and bus/coach licences. It must be passed before you can take your Module 3b on‑road test.

Depending on the category you’re taking, Module 3a includes:

Reversing exercise into a marked bay
Coupling & uncoupling for:
C C1 C1E and CE (rigid + trailer / artic)
D D1 D1E and DE (minibus / bus + trailer)

The examiner checks that you can control the vehicle safely and accurately in a confined space.

Module 3a Training – What We Cover

Our 3a training is designed to give you a clear, repeatable routine for the test, and the skills you need for real work.

Reversing Exercise

We cover:

Exact test layout and marking criteria
Positioning and set‑up before you start reversing
Use of reference points, mirrors and steering plans
How to correct mistakes calmly if you go off line
Safe use of handbrake, clutch and speed control

You’ll repeat the manoeuvre until you can complete it smoothly and consistently on your own.

Coupling & Uncoupling (for E Categories)

For C1E, CE, D1E and DE candidates, we also train you on:

Safe uncoupling procedure:
Securing the vehicle and trailer
Lowering support legs / jockey wheels
Disconnecting air/electrical lines correctly
Safe recoupling procedure:
Correct alignment and height
Making a secure connection
Re‑connecting lines and checking for leaks/faults
Final walk‑round and safety checks

You’ll learn a step‑by‑step routine that meets DVSA standards and is safe to use every day at work.

Train & Test on the Same Site

Because we have our own DVSA‑approved Module 3a area in Gaerwen:

You practise on the exact same layout used for your real 3a test
You use the same vehicle type for training and test
You become familiar with the yard, markings and reference points

This familiarity makes a big difference to confidence and performance on test day.

Who Is 3a Training For?

Our Module 3a sessions are suitable for:

Drivers on our full licence courses (C, CE, C1, C1E, D1, D, etc.)
Candidates who have failed a 3a test elsewhere and want focused help
Drivers who have trained with another provider but want to:
Practise reverses on our DVSA layout
Take the 3a test at our Gaerwen site

We are experienced with:

New drivers doing their first HGV or PCV licence
Upgrades (e.g. C to CE, D1 to D with trailer)
Professional drivers needing strong yard and trailer skills

Stand‑Alone 3a Sessions or Full Courses

You can book Module 3a training in different ways:

As part of a full course (C, CE, D, D1, C1, etc.)
As a stand‑alone 3a package if you only need:
Extra reversing practice, and/or
Coupling/uncoupling coaching, and
A 3a test at our site

We can also offer a pre‑test assessment: one session where we watch you do the manoeuvres, then advise how much extra training (if any) you are likely to need.

Entry Requirements for Module 3a

To take your Module 3a test you must:

Hold the correct provisional entitlement for the category (C1, C, D1, D, etc.)
Have passed the relevant theory tests for that category
Have completed a driver medical and DVLA entitlement (for new vocational licences)

Vehicle category (C1, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, etc.)
Your experience with large vehicles and trailers
Whether you are confident at reversing already
