What Is Category C1?
Category C1 allows you to drive:
- Vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes MAM
- With a trailer up to 750kg MAM
Common examples:
- Smaller ambulance vehicles
- 7.5t box and curtain-side trucks
- 7.5t horseboxes
- Larger delivery and utility vehicles
If you need to tow a heavier trailer behind a C1 vehicle, you’ll need C1E.
What Is Category C1E?
Category C1E allows you to:
- Drive a C1 vehicle (3.5–7.5 tonnes MAM)
- Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM
Subject to DVLA limits, the combined MAM for vehicle and trailer is normally up to 12,000kg.
Typical uses:
- Ambulances with heavier equipment trailers
- 7.5t horseboxes towing an additional trailer
- 7.5t delivery vehicles or recovery trucks with loaded trailers
We’ll confirm whether C1 alone is enough for you, or if you will benefit from adding C1E.
Who Needs C1 / C1E Training?
You may need C1 or C1E if:
- Your employer requires you to drive a 7.5 tonne vehicle (for example, ambulance service, utility or delivery firm)
- You passed your car test after 1 January 1997 and don’t have C1 by “grandfather rights”
- You passed before 1997 but now need C1 for work and want formal training and test
- You need to tow a larger trailer behind a C1 vehicle (C1E)
We are happy to speak with employers, ambulance trusts, businesses and individuals to confirm the best route.
