What is Category D1?
Category D1 entitles you to drive a minibus:
- With 9–16 passenger seats (plus driver)
- With a trailer up to 750kg MAM (maximum authorised mass)
Typical uses:
- School and college minibuses
- Community transport and dial‑a‑ride services
- Care home and hospital transport
- Sports clubs and youth organisations
If you want to tow a heavier trailer (over 750kg) with a minibus, you’ll need D1E.
What is Category D1E?
Category D1E extends your D1 entitlement so that you can:
- Drive a D1 minibus
- Tow a trailer over 750kg MAM, with the combined MAM usually up to 12,000kg (subject to DVLA rules and vehicle limits)
Typical uses:
- Minibus plus equipment trailer (sports kit, band equipment, luggage, mobility aids)
- Community or school vehicles with additional storage on a trailer
We’ll advise you if D1 alone is sufficient or if you’ll benefit from adding D1E.
Who Needs D1 / D1E Training?
You may need D1 or D1E if:
- You drive a minibus for work, or
- You receive any form of payment or benefit for driving, or
- You passed your car test after 1 January 1997 and don’t have D1 automatically, or
- Your organisation’s insurance or policy requires a D1 licence.
We are happy to talk to schools, organisations and employers to clarify the legal requirements for their drivers.

Entry Requirements for D1 & D1E
To start D1 / D1E training with Huw Williams Driver Training Ltd, you’ll generally need:
